Acoustic Guitar Lessons Are Worth It
Learning to play the guitar is something just about anyone can do. Of course most people aren’t going to end up in the rock and roll hall of fame, but anyone who has a desire to play and is up for the challenge is likely to be well rewarded for the effort. And make no mistake. There will be effort required. Learning a few chords isn’t that difficult, but really learning to play takes time and dedication. Acoustic guitar lessons are a great way to get started.
All too often the basics are overlooked when someone is learning something new. The is probably because people want to see progress as quickly as possible. Sadly, this can cause real problems for someone learning the guitar for the first time. Skipping the essentials can lead to the creation of bad habits than can take years to overcome.
Before the first chord is strummed, a newcomer is well advised to spend some time learning about the instrument. There are many parts that a player should be able to identify such as the neck, the bridge, and the keys. Learning the numberings of strings and fingers makes progressing less tenuous, and tuning is a critical skill too. Not much sounds worse than a guitar that is out of tune. Certainly the ability to read music is nice to have.
This is not to say the ability to read music is completely necessary. There are many examples of professionals who never mastered the art of reading written music, but many of these do have a basic knowledge. A newcomer would be wise to take a little time to familiarize themselves with the idea.
Recognizing that the skills required to become a good player don’t come overnight is wise. It may only take a few hours to learn some chords and a few simple songs, but the fingertip callouses and the ability to really make music are things that happen with time and disciplined dedication.
More advanced chords, scales, strumming and fingering patters, and the ability to reproduce a given style of play such as blues, rock, or country, takes plenty of time and tons of practice. There are courses that can help, or one might choose to attend lessons in person. Lots of players figured it out on their own, but just as many more took the time to learn from someone else.
There are no age requirements for learning to play, and acoustic guitar lessons, be they in the form of compact disks, books, or instructors, are an excellent source of information and motivation. They can help teach newcomers to practice properly and increase their potential to enjoy the learning process from the fist day.
